Open Access Endoscopy and Facilitated Access Colonoscopy

Southern Gastrointestinal Services in conjunction with Flinders Private Hospital offers a streamlined service for patients requiring an Endoscopy and / or Colonoscopy procedure.

The Open Access Endoscopy and Facilitated Access Colonoscopy service provides a fast gastrointestinal assessment (endoscopy within 1 week / colonoscopy within two weeks) service for patients. In order to provide the best service, we believe all patients should be seen by a Specialist prior to endoscopy. However, in some cases an endoscopy booking can be made at the time of referral for initial assessment if appropriate.

Facilitated Access Endoscopies and Colonoscopies will be immediately booked onto a procedure list within two weeks, and a prior consultation with a Gastroenterologist will be arranged.

Patients require an Open Access Endoscopy Referral Form from their General Practitioner. Simply return the completed referral form via fax to 08 8275 3365 and an appointment will be made. For all enquiries regarding this service please call 08 8275 3366.

The Adelaide Bariatric Centre was established in 1995 as the first obesity clinic in Adelaide. The surgeons have performed more than 4000 weight loss surgeries for the treatment of obesity. It brings together a multidisciplinary team of experienced, minimally invasive Bariatric Surgeons, Bariatric Practitioners, Bariatric Nurse, Dietitians, Personal Trainer and a Medical Practitioner Therapist. All team members are experienced and dedicated to the care and treatment of patients undergoing weight loss surgery.

Being located within Flinders Private Hospital enables the patient to receive coordinated care between the Adelaide Bariatric Centre multidisciplinary team and the hospital services.

Our Bariatric Surgeons, Associate Professor Lilian Kow and Mr Jacob Chisholm are at the forefront of weight loss surgery and care of people suffering obesity. Both have a keen interest in new surgical and minimally invasive approaches for the treatment of obesity.

There are many types of weight loss procedures being performed in Australia today including restrictive, malabsorptive and combination procedures. It is important to find a surgeon that can offer you access to all procedures so that together you and your surgeon can work out the most appropriate procedure for you and your situation. Below is a list of procedures that can be performed by the Bariatric Surgeons at the Adelaide Bariatric Centre. To find out more about each procedure click the link below.

What is obesity?

Obesity is a complicated medical condition in which excess fat accumulates to the point that it can have a negative impact on a person’s health and life expectancy. Obesity is normally measured using the BMI (Body Mass Index) method and is a measurement of height versus weight. There are known limitations with the BMI method but it is the most reliable indicator so far. To determine your BMI use the calculator on our website.

Bariatric Surgery key points:

  • Weight loss surgery offers the best long-term results for the treatment of obesity
  • The majority of procedures are able to be performed as minimal access surgery (keyhole surgery)
  • After surgery, weight-related health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and arthritis may improve, and in many cases, resolve completely
  • The best outcomes following surgery can be achieved by having regular follow up with a multidisciplinary team for support
