Obesity and Bariatrics at Flinders Private Hospital
For some people, weight reduction becomes a major problem and they are unable to lose significant amounts of weight following extensive dietary manipulation. For these people, surgery is an option which assists in the achievement of sustainable weight reduction.
Surgery for morbid obesity (bariatric surgery) has been performed at Flinders Private Hospital since it opened in 1999. The results of the various procedures have been prospectively evaluated in the past and there is clear indication that surgical intervention produces significant and desirable results.
It is important to point out that surgery alone cannot solve the problem of obesity. Surgery is a holistic approach to the management of obesity. For this reason it is important for all patients undergoing bariatric surgery to enter a prospective program which aims to control their dietary habits and enhances their physical activity because it is all of these factors combined which ultimately lead to a desired outcome.
Band Fit
An Exercise Program Post Lap Banding
The Band Fit Program is a six-week program of safe low impact exercise with gentle stretching and strength training. Our aim is to get patients moving and motivated to continue a healthy active lifestyle after their operation. Information will be given on how to exercise safely and effectively, and how to access appropriate exercise classes in the community after the program finishes. Further education is provided on the benefits of healthy eating habits by a Dietitian and patients are involved in regular support group sessions.
